Thornhill isn’t its own city anymore — it hasn’t been since 1971, when it was absorbed into the newly formed towns of Markham and Vaughan. But the name never went away, and neither did the community: Yonge Street splits it down the middle, with the Markham side to the east and the Vaughan side to the west, and residents on both sides still call it Thornhill first.
Maxcan Immigration is based at Woodbine Avenue and Steeles Avenue in Markham, off Highway 404, a short drive from Thornhill on either side of Yonge Street. Because Thornhill sits across two municipalities, a lot of national and downtown firms don’t think of it as a single place to serve — we do.
Maxcan was founded by Mary L. Zhang, who immigrated to Canada herself. Mary is a member in good standing of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC) and the Law Society of Ontario (LSO), and handles every file personally. Service is available in English and Chinese (中文).
Immigration Help for Thornhill Families and Professionals
Thornhill is one of the more established, multigenerational communities in the GTA, and that shows in the kind of questions we get:
- Bringing parents and grandparents to Canada: parent and grandparent sponsorship, common among Thornhill’s many multigenerational households.
- Spouse and partner sponsorship: spousal and partner sponsorship, including rebuilding a case after a refusal.
- Skilled workers and recent graduates: Express Entry, the Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Programs.
- Students: study permits and extensions for students at Thornlea, Thornhill and St. Robert secondary schools, followed by post-graduation work permits.
- Business owners: the Self-Employed Persons Program and Start-Up Visa, common among Thornhill’s independent retailers and professionals along Yonge Street and Centre Street.
- Citizenship and PR documents: citizenship applications and PR card renewals.
- Refusals and inadmissibility: Humanitarian & Compassionate applications, Temporary Resident Permits and criminal rehabilitation.
Serving Both Sides of Thornhill
On the Markham side (east of Yonge Street): German Mills, Bayview Glen, and the area around John Street and Bayview Avenue. We have dedicated pages for German Mills and Bayview Glen with more detail on those specific neighbourhoods.
On the Vaughan side (west of Yonge Street): Old Thornhill, Beverley Glen, Uplands, Royal Orchard, and Westmount, along the Centre Street and Clark Avenue corridors. This is the side of Thornhill that most GTA immigration firms overlook, and it’s just as close to our office as the Markham side.
Wherever you are in Thornhill, on either side of Yonge, we’re a short drive away.

Why Choose an Immigration Consultant Over a Lawyer?
Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants work exclusively on immigration matters. Many clients prefer the direct, focused attention, often at a more reasonable cost than a large law firm where a file can end up with a junior associate. With Maxcan, you work with Mary from your first call through to your final decision.
